Raising an Infant on a Budget: Food, Medicine, Toiletries
posted by Andrea | 04/18/2012 | 15 comments
In the months since Nora was born, I’ve received a crazy number of emails asking what items I would suggest for soon-to-be-moms looking to stay clutter-free and stick to a tight budget. While I definitely don’t have ALL the answers; after almost 5 months, I can at least share the items we regularly used for the newborn/infant stage.
All week long, I’ll be sharing my “must-have” items for infants.
Monday = Nursery Items
Tuesday = Baby Gear
Wednesday = Food, Medicine, Toiletries
Thursday = Clothing
Friday = Items for the New Mom
Saturday = Recap, a few more tips, and a FREE Printable!
I’m sure there are tons of different opinions on what you do and don’t need; so I just want to stress that these are the things that worked for us. They might not work for everyone!

My Must-Have Food, Medicine, and Toiletries for Infants
.
PUMP
I chose to nurse Nora and I wanted to have a pump so I could stock-pile my milk. I purchased the Medela breast pump with TONS of accessories for only $75 from a friend, and then I used these sanitizing bags to clean everything really well.
MILK STORAGE BAGS
If you’re going to pump, you’ll need to store your milk somehow. I use these and am very happy with them so far.
BOTTLES
Even if you’re nursing, you’ll probably still want a few bottles just in case you’re gone or need a break. There are tons of different types out there, so again, I would try to borrow a few until you figure out what ones your baby likes.
We use Avent bottles — but that’s just because my mom found a huge bag of them for $3 at a garage sale!

BOTTLE CLEANING BRUSH
Also, if you’re going to use bottles, I’d suggest getting a bottle cleaning brush — it makes life SO much easier!
PLASTIC BIB
My sister-in-law told me about these Baby Bjorn plastic bibs… and even though Nora isn’t eating a ton of real food yet, I would definitely consider this bib a “must have” for babies. It wipes clean in a matter of seconds and will grow with your baby through the toddler years.
PORTABLE HIGH CHAIR
I wanted an inexpensive, space-saving high chair; so I was thrilled when I found this Regalo Portable High Chair for only $18!

FORMULA
Obviously, if you’re not planning to nurse, you’ll need to stock up on formula. I don’t know much about the different types of formula, but I do know that some babies prefer different types of formula so you may want to have a variety on hand. I also know that the different brands of formula offer freebies for new moms, so you might want to look into that.
DIAPERS & WIPES
No matter what type of diapers you decide to use, you’ll most definitely want to have a good stock-pile before the baby arrives. You will use more than you think and you really don’t want to run out

DIAPER RASH CREAM
We use the big tubs of Boudreaux’s Butt Paste and boy does it work wonders!
BABY LOTION
We put lotion on Nora every night before bed. We also use that time to give her a mini massage. I think it helps her relax at the end of the day.

BABY WASH — obviously a necessity for bath time!
NASAL ASPIRATOR — we use this daily!
GAS DROPS — another item we use daily.
VAPORIZER – we almost didn’t buy one of these, but I’m so glad we did, as it really helped when Nora’s nose was all stuffed up a couple weeks ago.
INFANT PAIN RELIEVER – this will come in handy for those 2-month shots.
What were/are your must-have infant food, medicine, and toiletry items?

My Must-Have Baby Gear Items for Infants
.
These days, there is practically an unlimited number of items new parents are told we NEED to have for our new babies — and while many of these products might make life a little easier, most of them really aren’t necessities!
Here are some of the items we use regularly.

CAR SEAT & STROLLER
We actually got an amazing deal on 2 car seats, 2 car seat bases, and a double stroller from a friend. And yes, I would recommend purchasing a double stroller right away if you’re planning to have multiple children. We also found a small umbrella stroller for $5 that we can use if we don’t want to lug the double stroller around.
I know there are lots of opinions on purchasing a USED car seat, so I just thought I should mention that you can have used car seats properly inspected by your local fire department to make sure they are safe (which both of ours are). We saved a ridiculous amount of money and have a “back-up” car seat just in case!
PACIFIER
I know there is some debate about using a pacifier, but we used one from the very first day Nora was born and it has saved our sanity time and time again!

BURP CLOTHS
I didn’t register for any burp cloths because Dave’s mom made a bunch for us. We also ended up getting several more from other friends and family members. I would say you want at least 15 burp cloths (I ended up with 40!)
BLANKETS
I didn’t register for any blankets either because I knew people would make them for us. We ended up getting close to 10 blankets — which was MORE than enough. I think you probably only need 3 or 4.
Nora didn’t like to be swaddled, but if you want to swaddle your baby, then you might want a couple swaddle blankets as well.
BOPPY PILLOW
These are pretty pricey if you buy them new, but of course, I found one for $10 on Craigslist (with 2 covers). I love that they are completely washable… and can be used through the entire infant stage. When she was teeny-tiny, we used the Boppy for nursing and to prop her up while laying on the ground. As she got older, we used it to strengthen her neck for “tummy time” and now we’re using it to help her sit up!

BABY CARRIER
There are probably 100 different types of baby carriers out there, but I didn’t BUY any of them. After Nora was born, I borrowed a couple different types to see which one we liked best. So far, we really like the Moby wrap and I was fortunate enough to borrow one from a friend at church. We don’t use it a ton, but it’s still nice to have.
Eventually, we will probably invest in some type of “baby back-pack” that we can use to carry her around when a stroller wouldn’t be convenient.
SWING and/or BOUNCY SEAT
Nora LOVES her swing and bouncy seat… but again, all babies are different. As a newborn, we used the swing all day long, and now that she’s getting a bit older, we’re using the bouncy seat all day long! I really wanted the Baby Bjorn bouncy seat because it’s completely washable and it folds totally flat, but they are super expensive. Thankfully, I found one on Craigslist for a fraction of the price!
Also, I should mention that we borrowed these items from friends before we actually purchased them (via Craigslist). We wanted to make sure Nora would actually use them before spending any money.

CD’s or MUSICAL TOY
Nora really loves flashing lights and music so we try to “stimulate” her by playing baby CD’s and musical toys.
DIAPER BAG
I don’t have a “real” diaper bag, but instead, just use this bag I got from my cousin as a gift.

It seems that different babies prefer different types and amounts of “gear”, so it’s nice to have a few different items on hand… at least for the first few weeks and months.

Raising an Infant on a Budget: Nursery Items
posted by Andrea | 04/16/2012 | 19 comments
Before Nora was born, I shared a few tips for having a baby on a budget and how I managed to get almost everything I needed for less than $300!
And in the months since Nora was born, I’ve received a crazy number of emails asking what items I would suggest for soon-to-be-moms looking to stay clutter-free and stick to a tight budget. While I definitely don’t have ALL the answers; after almost 5 months, I can at least share the items we regularly used for the newborn/infant stage.
So for the rest of the week, I’ll be sharing my “must-have” items for infants.
Monday = Nursery Items
Tuesday = Baby Gear
Wednesday = Food, Medicine, Toiletries
Thursday = Clothing
Friday = Items for the New Mom
Saturday = Recap, a few more tips, and a FREE printable!
However, before I get started, I want to mention that almost every mom I’ve ever talked to has stressed the fact that EVERY CHILD IS DIFFERENT. So while these might be the must-have items for Nora, your child (and even our future children) might prefer something completely different!
Also, I’m sure there are tons of different opinions on what you do and don’t need; so again, I just want to stress that these are the things that worked for us. They might not work for everyone!

My Must-Have Nursery Items for Infants
.
Of course you want your nursery to be a safe, comfortable place for you and your baby — but you most definitely do not have to spend a ton of money to achieve that. You can see the full tour of our simple nursery here, but below is a list of the nursery items I’m glad we had.

CRIB / MATTRESS
We found our crib and mattress on Craigslist and received them as a gift from my parents. Yes, I know that our crib has a drop-down side and those aren’t “legal” to sell in stores anymore; but it’s the exact crib I wanted and Dave and I feel it is safe for Nora.
BEDDING
I purchased 2 white sheets and 2 mattress pads and I actually have them ALL on the bed at the same time. That way, if there is an accident, all I have to do it take the top layer off.
I also purchased 3 of these sheet protectors - and I can’t even tell you how much laundry those have saved me! Nora drools all the time, so instead of washing her sheets, I just wash the sheet protectors. Oh, and I made a quilt for the crib, but that was just for decorative purposes!
CHANGING TABLE / PAD
We purchased a used dresser on Craigslist and secured a changing pad on top (after I painted the dresser). It serves as our changing table and has tons of extra storage for blankets, diapers, clothes, etc.

COMFY CHAIR
We purchased the Poang chair from IKEA because it was cheap and it didn’t take up much room. It’s super comfortable and we actually ended up purchasing two more for our living room!
SHELF and/or SIDE TABLE
We have a small table next to the chair for a lamp and a clock; we also have a small book case for books, toys, etc. The table is a great place for me to set my water bottle, phone, or Nora’s pipe when I’m feeding her in the middle of the night.

FAN or WHITE NOISE
We found a small $5 fan and use that to make white noise, which seems to help her sleep better and blocks out some of the noise from the rest of our house.
I should also mention that we put a small heater in our nursery too — but that’s just because we turn our heat down to 55 at night
MONITOR
We sleep with a fan on, so we had to have a monitor in order to hear Nora cry. However, we found this Angel Care monitor on Craigslist for $20 and we love it. If your room is right next to your nursery, you probably don’t even need a monitor.
LAMP / NIGHT LIGHT
We keep a small nightlight on all night long so I don’t have to turn the main light on in the middle of the night. Our nightlight might possibly be the best $2 we spent
ROOM DARKENING SHADES
You don’t necessarily need the exact same kind we have, but you will want some type of heavy curtains or shades that darken the room for nap time.

{you can hardly see our shades… they just blend into the window trim, which is what I wanted}
GARBAGE CAN
We actually just use paper grocery bags with newspaper layered on the bottom. Every few days, we change the bag or sprinkle a little baking soda in to remove odor.
HAMPER
We put a small clothes basket in the bottom of our nursery closet which is right next to our changing table. This works well for quickly “disposing” of her dirty clothes.
Here are a few items we didn’t feel the need to purchase for our nursery:
- Matching furniture — seriously, it’s so expensive, and I just LOVE our mix-n-match nursery!
- Bassinet — we put Nora in her crib from day one
- Video monitor
- Fancy decorations
- Matching sheets/window treatments — I just went with all white
- Diaper Genie – our paper grocery bags work just fine!
- Toy box
- Mobile — I honestly just don’t like how they look
As I mentioned before, our nursery is pretty simple… but it works for us!

My T-shirt Quilt
posted by Andrea | 04/10/2012 | 9 comments
During my spring break “staycation” I showed a few pictures of my fabulous t-shirt quilt… but I didn’t really go into much detail about the process, or about how you could create your own t-shirt quilt.

And since I absolutely LOVE the fact that I was able to transform a bunch of t-shirt clutter into an extremely useful, practical, and memorable item — I figured I should share a few more details {plus, writing one post about this is easier than answer all the emails and questions I’ve been getting!}

Seriously… doesn’t it just look fabulous!
.
My sister thinks she wants a quilt for a wedding present this summer and Dave liked it so much that he’s already setting t-shirts aside for his quilt! I suppose I can’t blame them.

A Few More Details:
.
Jane, of MaidenJane.com, is the woman who made my t-shirt quilt — you can find her sewing lots of creative t-shirt quilts over on her website AND at her Etsy shop.
My quilt looks so fantastic, and I was simply amazed at how quickly she finished it! The whole process was so simple — I just sent her my shirts, she emailed me with some color choices for the fabric around the t-shirts, I selected the color I wanted (black), and then she contacted me a few days later with pictures of the finished quilt!
If you’re feeling creative (but don’t have a ton of sewing skills) you can purchase her t-shirt quilt kit — which includes everything you need to make your own t-shirt quilt (except the t-shirts of course!)
Or, if you are a more experienced sewer but just need a little guidance, you can buy Jane’s t-shirt quilt pattern and do the rest of the work yourself.
If you’re looking for something a little different than a traditional t-shirt quilt, you might also look into Jane’s “Daddy Quilts” that she makes with men’s button-up shirts!
Special Discount for SOL Readers!
.
If you order anything through the Maiden Jane Esty Shop, make sure you include the following code for 10% off! SIMPLE10

Since I only wanted to use 12 shirts for the quilt (you can use up to 20), I sewed a few of my shirts together before I sent them to Maiden Jane (see image above).
That way, I was able to use parts of 16 t-shirts and get the most “bang for my buck”!

Nora’s Taggie Blanket
.
Many of you also asked about the taggie blanket she made for Nora with one of my tie-dye t-shirts and several ribbon scraps I had lying around.

Nora love her taggie blanket, and we’ve already gotten SO many compliments on it!

If you are interested in giving a taggie blanket to a cute baby in your life, you can either have Jane make one for you, OR you can download Jane’s FREE taggie blanket pattern from her site.

You can see many more pictures of Jane’s gorgeous t-shirt quilts here, and of course you can also follow her on Facebook, Twitter, and/or Pinterest.
I’m simply thrilled with my t-shirt quilt and I can’t wait until Dave gets enough t-shirts so we can order one for him too.

If you have any questions about my quilt or about the process, either contact Jane directly or leave a comment below and I’ll try to answer as many of them as I can!

How I Declutter My Inbox With Gmail Filters
posted by Andrea | 03/28/2012 | 12 comments
Due to my blog and all the different virtual assistant jobs I have, I currently have ten {yes TEN} different email addresses that all go to one Gmail Inbox! And even though I get upwards of 100 emails every day, my Inbox almost always has less than 5 emails when I “close up shop” for the night.
No, I don’t spend all day checking and responding to email… and no, I don’t just delete them without responding. Instead, I use filters to automatically file my incoming emails to the appropriate folders — this way, they don’t even show up in my Inbox and I can respond to emails in batches when I have time.
For example, I get email notifications any time someone comments on my blog — so instead of having those emails clutter up my Inbox all day long, I have them automatically forwarded {or filtered} to a separate folder. Then, at the end of the day, I can take a chunk of time to read through those comments and respond as necessary.
I also have a filter set up for each of my VA jobs — so whenever I get an email for a particular job, it goes directly to that folder and I can then handle all the emails at one time — saving me lots of time and keeping my Inbox clutter-free.
If you’ve never done it before, here’s how to set up a filter in Gmail:
STEP 1: Get to the “Filters” tab
.
Click on the “gear” in the top right corner of your Inbox, then click on settings. Finally, click on “Filters”.

STEP 2: Create Your First Filter
.
Once you click on the “Fliters” tab, you should see a link towards the bottom {center} of the window that says “Create a New Filter”. When you click on that link, the following form will pop up.

Fill out the information and then click “Create filter with this search”
STEP 3: Set Up Your Filter
.
After you “create your filter” another box will pop up with options for your newly created filter.
I ALWAYS click “Skip the Inbox” so I don’t ever have to look at the filtered emails until I’m ready.

Also, you’ll want to make sure to direct the filtered email to one of your previously created labels.
For example, I direct all the emails with my blog comments to a “Follow up” label. I direct all my VA job emails to specific labels created for each of those jobs/clients.
I also check the box “Never send it to Spam” because I don’t want to miss any of those emails.
Once you have the the filter set up how you want it {you can always edit it later} click the blue “Create Filter” button.
STEP 4: Use Your Filters
.
After you have your filters set up, you will no longer get those emails in your inbox — instead, they will go directly to the folders you specified in step 3 above.
However, you’ll easily be able to tell when you have unread messages in any of your folders by the bold number to the right of the folder.

Once you have a few unread emails in a specific folder, you can click on that folder and read, respond, file, delete as necessary.
STEP 5: Edit or Delete Filters
.
Once your filters are set up, you can easily change, edit, or delete them at any time via the Settings tab.

So that’s how you set up a filter in Gmail!
I know this might sound like a lot of hassle — especially at first. But if I had to guess, I’d say that my filters save me AT LEAST 1 hour every day because I don’t have to manually file these emails, I don’t have to look at them and scroll past them to find other emails, and I can deal with similar emails in “batches” instead of one at a time.
Plus, my Inbox is always clutter free — which psychologically makes me feel less stressed every time I check my email!
Do you use filters? Or do you have any other time-saving email tips?

Why I’m NOT Purging
posted by Andrea | 03/20/2012 | 21 comments
Yes, you read the title of this post correctly; I really have NOT purged much these past couple of months — and it’s not because I’m too busy, too lazy, or any other excuse!!
The reason I haven’t been purging is because I haven’t been bringing more stuff into our home.
Besides groceries, my new computer, and some choice baby items, I honestly haven’t brought anything into our home for months {probably since before Nora was born!} I didn’t buy any new Christmas decorations, Dave and I haven’t bought any new clothing, I haven’t purchased any new items for the house/kitchen/etc., Dave hasn’t purchased anything for school, and we haven’t even purchased much for Nora!
I have done some online shopping — but that was mostly for Christmas gifts, baby gifts for friends, diapers, and other perishable items that we used.
So since we haven’t been adding anything, I haven’t felt the need to purge anything!
To be perfectly honest, I didn’t even realize my “lack of purging” until a couple weeks ago when I got a few emails from readers asking why I hadn’t blogged about any recent organizing projects…
I suppose it HAS been awhile!
Dave and I are planning to do pare down our master closet when he’s home over spring break, and I plan to go through our kitchen stuff in preparation for our kitchen renovation… but other than that, we really don’t need to purge anything right now.
We actually have 2 completely empty closets in our house, a couple empty drawers in our kitchen, several empty drawers/cabinets in our bathrooms, and even an entire room with nothing but a bed in it!
How We Avoid Bringing In More Stuff
.
Obviously every family, person, and home is different; but here are a few things that help us limit what we bring into our home.
PAPER:
We toss junk mail ASAP, recycle magazines and newspapers after we read them {or we read them online}, we pay all our bills electronically, and we don’t get any paper statements. I’m also somewhat annal about filing… everything
CLOTHES:
We rarely buy clothes. Period! I borrowed ALL my maternity clothes, and promptly gave them back within 2 weeks after Nora was born. We also borrowed tons of baby clothes, and I’ve already returned the 0-3 month stuff.
Dave’s wardrobe is pretty simple; and I’ll be honest, I wear the same things over and over again! We usually shop for Dave’s clothes in August {before the new school year} and I don’t think I’ve purchased a new piece of clothing since last spring {before I knew I was pregnant!}
As Nora continues to grow, we will save much of her clothes for future children or for friends/relatives, but I’ll keep it in tubs at the top of her closet.
BOOKS/MOVIES/MUSIC:
We get all our books from the library {and then return them}. We don’t watch {or own} many movies, but when we do, we rent them or watch them with Dave’s parent {they have a Netflix membership}. And we don’t have any CD’s because everything is saved digitally on our computers, MP3 players, and iPhones.
TOYS/GAMES:
We don’t have many toys or games {yet} but I know they will be coming soon! So far, Nora has one very small basket of toys and one shelf of books in her nursery. For now, we keep her toys in her room; but once she’s older, my goal is to transform the large landing area at the top of our stairs into a play area. There’s a huge closet off the landing area and I’m planning to keep all the toys, games, and kid’s things in there.
HOBBIES:
We are fortunate that neither one of us has hobbies that take up lots of space. Dave enjoys basketball, running, lifting weights, and reading — none of which contribute to clutter in our home.
I enjoy blogging, digital scrap-booking, sewing, and house projects. The first two don’t take up any space, I only allow myself one small bin of sewing things, and house projects usually don’t require storage after they are finished.
OTHER ITEMS:
Like I said, I haven’t been shopping in months — which makes it pretty hard to bring anything in. We did get a fair amount of gifts for Christmas and for Nora’s birth — but thankfully, many of them were “usable gifts” like meals, diapers, gift cards, or other items we actually needed to replace something else.
So the reason I haven’t done much purging since before Nora was born is simply because we haven’t been bringing things in to add clutter to our home.
Not only have I saved loads of time and money by not shopping, I’ve also saved space by not accumulating clutter in our home, and time by not needing to purge as regularly.
I’ll admit… after thinking and writing about my lack of purging, I’m definitely in the mood for another big purge. We’ll see what happens when Dave is home over spring break and I have a little extra time
When was your last purge?
